<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and method for friction stir welding, in which deformation of an arm at offset operation can be suppressed and welding can be carried out accurately. <P>SOLUTION: The apparatus includes: a pivot axis 4; a pressurizing axis 2; an offset axis 3; and the arm 50 that leads to a tip 50c via a bending part through a body 50b extending from a base end 50a in the X direction to be formed of an L-shape or C-shape, is formed such that the base end, the body, and the tip are positioned on an X-Y plane, and includes a support of a workpiece inside the tip. An axial direction of the pressurizing axis is set in the X direction, and the pressurizing axis includes a guide rail 13 coupled with the base end of the arm and a slider 14 sliding in the X direction.
