Disclosed are an apparatus for encoding and an apparatus for decoding supporting scalable multichannel audio signals, and a method for the apparatuses performing same. When compressing/recovering the multichannel audio signals to compress and recreate high-quality 3D sounds, the apparatuses and the method can provide the following functions in an integrated structure: (1) a sound quality scalability function for providing audio having a variety of sound qualities that are adaptive to a transmission environment, performance of a terminal, and a listening environment; (2) a channel scalability function for providing multichannel signals having a variety of formats which are adaptive to the transmission environment, the performance of the terminal, and a playing environment (speaker arrangement environment) of the terminal; and (3) an object scalability function for individually controlling specific audio objects so as to maximize a 3D sound stage effect.
