RAIN GAUGE WITH PARTICULATE SEPARATOR

The rain gauge with a particulate separator (100) is a balance-type precipitation gauge having a particulate separator for removing sand, dust and other environmental particulate matter. The particulate separator (102) includes a spherical particulate separator mounted beneath a central nozzle (113) and above first and second receptacles (127, 127a) of the gauge. A frustoconical particulate separator (108) is mounted beneath the spherical particulate separator (102) and above the first and second receptacles (127, 127a), a central channel (114) being formed therethrough. In operation, liquid flows through the central nozzle (113) and clings to an outer surface of the spherical particulate separator (102), flowing through the central channel (114) to alternately fill the first and second receptacles (127, 127a). Particulate matter flowing through the central nozzle (113) is deflected by the outer surface of the spherical particulate separator (102) to strike an inclined upper surface of the frustoconical particulate separator (108), falling through at least one vent (112) formed through the housing (109) to exit the housing (109).
