A hydraulic ram (30) for an excavator coupler (10) for a mini-excavator. The ram (30) comprises a head (38), a hydraulic cylinder (36) , a rod (32) having a piston (34) at its proximal end, the piston (34) being fitted within a bore of the cylinder (36), and a check valve (40) mounted at least partially within the head (38) of the ram (30). Two hinge pins mount the ram (30) within the coupler (10). Further, the rod (32) or piston (34) has a recess or cut-out (95) in its proximal end for accommodating a distal end of the check valve to maintain a full range of travel for the piston (34) within the bore of the cylinder (36). <Figure 2>
