Thioethers are prepared by heating an aliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic mercaptan with an ethylenically unsaturated hydrocarbon, for example, ethylene, propylene, isobutylene, nonylene, cyclohexene and styrene, in the presence of a mercaptide of a metal of Periodic Group I to III. Aliphatic, aromatic and heterocyclic mercaptans such as dodecyl mercaptan, thiophenol, p-thiocresol, or 2-mercaptobenzthiazole, or halogen, alkoxy, nitro or amino substituted derivatives thereof are used. The metallic mercaptides preferably use the mercaptan to be alkylated, and may be prepared in situ. The mercaptide is added to the mercaptan and the unsaturated hydrocarbon, optionally in an inert solvent, or in an excess of unsaturated hydrocarbon. Examples describe the preparation of ethyl phenyl sulphide, ethyl-(2-ethyl phenyl)-sulphide, isopropyl phenyl sulphide and isopropyl-(isopropylphenyl) sulphide, n-propyl phenyl sulphide, t-butyl-p-tolyl sulphide, t-butyl-p-tolyl sulphide, isobutyl dodecyl sulphide, nonyl phenyl sulphide, cyclohexyl phenyl sulphide, 2-propyl mercapto benzthiazole, t-butyl phenyl sulphide, dodecyl-(b -phenyl ethyl) sulphide, isopropyl-(p-chlorophenyl) sulphide, and isobutyl phenyl sulphide using mercaptides prepared from aluminium, sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium. The products are suitable as antioxidants and stabilizers and additives for fuels and mineral oils, and as intermediates. |
