A fuel for generating gas in gas-pressure operated devices such as rocket motors comprises a homogenous mixture including an amidic derivative of carbonic acid, an oxidizing salt and a catalyst for controlling and modulating the burning of the mixture, the oxidizing salt and the catalyst being present in a particle size smaller than that of the amidic derivative. In an example, 80 to 90 parts of guanidine nitrate are mixed with 35 to 50 parts potassium dichromate, 0.5 to 2 parts of sesquinoxide of iron and 1 to 3 parts of kaolin or china clay, all parts being by weight. The catalyst may alternatively be vanadium pentoxide or compounds of molybdenum. Heat-resistant materials such as asbestos may be incorporated and to improve combustion rates 0.5 parts by weight of potassium nitrate or potassium permanganate may be added. The particle size is determined by the rate of burning required.
