The invention comprises compounds of general formula: wherein R is benzyl, 4-chlorobenzyl or 3, 4-dichlorobenzyl when R1 is a straight chain alkyl group having 8-12 carbon atoms or wherein R and R1 are each 3, 4-dichlorobenzyl; and their acid addition salts; and their preparation by reacting a thiourea of formula: with an S-alkylating agent to form a S-alkyl-pseudothiouronium salt, and reacting this with an amine R1NH2. In the Provisional Specification either R or R1 may be benzyl substituted by one or two halogen radicals or R1 may be straight chain alkyl having 1-16 carbon atoms. Additional examples are the N-(3,4-dichlorobenzyl)-N1-(2,4-dichlorobenzyl)-, N-(4-chlorobenzyl)-N1-(3, 4-dichlorobenzyl)-, N, N1-di-(4-chlorobenzyl)-, and N-(3, 4-dichlorobenzyl)-N1 (n-propyl, n-butyl, n-amyl, n-hexyl or n-heptyl)-guanidines.ALSO:Bacteriostatic and fungistatic compositions comprise a guanidine of general formula (wherein R is benzyl, 4-chlorobenzyl or 3,4-dichlorobenzyl when R1 is a straight chain alkyl group having 8-12 carbon atoms or wherein R and R1 are each 3,4-dichlorobenzyl), or an acid addition salt thereof, admixed with a suitable extending agent. Liquid (solutions, suspensions, emulsions), semi-solid (ointments) and solid (pellets, granules, tablets, powders, dusts) compositions are mentioned for use as industrial preservatives and disinfectants and for topical application to skin. In the Provisional Specification either R or R1 may be benzyl substituted by one or two halogen (e.g. chlorine) radicals or R1 may be straight chain alkyl having 1-16 carbon atoms.
