<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus that quickly performs accurate resistance detection for every recording medium, and provides excellent transferability without causing a reduction in productivity. <P>SOLUTION: Resistance detection means 70 has a detection unit 72 including a plurality of electrode members. The detection unit 72 contacts a top face of a sheet S stored in a paper cassette at an appropriate pressure. A current flowing in the resistance detection means 70 by an application of voltage is detected by an ammeter 76, and the sheet resistance is determined from the voltage and the current.
