PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide recombinant vectors with selected desirable phenotypes for use in a variety of applications, including for example, gene therapy and recombinant protein production, and further provide other related advantages.

SOLUTION: This isolated nucleic acid molecules comprise an altered alphavirus nonstructural protein gene which, when operably incorporated into a recombinant alphavirus particle, increases the time required to reach 50% inhibition of host-cell directed macromolecular synthesis following expression in mammalian cells, as compared to a wild-type alphavirus.
