Provided is a binder composition for an electrode of an aqueous lithium ion secondary cell with which an electrode slurry for a lithium ion secondary cell having good properties and excellent shelf life can be obtained, and with which a lithium ion secondary cell having excellent discharge rate properties and cycle properties can be obtained. Provided is a binder composition for an electrode of a lithium ion secondary cell containing polymer particles comprising (a) an ethylenic unsaturated carboxylic acid ester compound and (b) an ethylenic unsaturated sulfonic acid compound, where the mass ratio of (a)/(b) is 98 to 91/2 to 9 and the total amount of (a) and (b) is at least 70 mass% of the monomer starting material.
