An hydraulic coupling comprises a pump 3, Fig. 1, driven by an input shaft 2 and a motor 4 driving an output shaft 5, the pump and motor being in a fluid-tight container 1. The input and output shafts may be connected by a flexible coupling 12 and mechanical ratio gearing to the shaft E of a prime mover and a mechanism to be driven, such as the propeller shaft of a boat, respectively. The pump, which is of the axial-piston type, has its output variable and reversible by movement of a lever 10 tilting the pump about an axis 14 and supplies fluid through a line C to the motor which is of the fixed displacement axial-piston type. A valve block 6 is provided and controls an hydraulic switching member. The output of the pump may be automatically controlled by the pressure in line C acting against a spring-loaded piston 42, Fig. 4, to move a stop 47 engaging the housing of the pump. The coupling may be cooled by a fan 13 blowing air over ribs on the container, by cooling tubes passing through the container, or by the provision of a liquid cooling jacket, the heated liquid in the jacket serving to heat an air space, such as a cabin. The container may act as a reservoir and is provided with oil and air filters 8, 9. The axis of shaft 5 may be arranged at an angle to the axis of shaft 2.</p> |
