For projectors, laser sources are an alternative to gas-discharge and incandescent lamps. However, a problem with these laser sources may be that a human viewer perceives an irritating interference phenomenon, known as speckle, in a region illuminated by a laser source on a projection area (18). It is an object of the present invention to use a laser projector (10) to produce on a projection area (18) an illuminated region (20) for which a viewer perceives only a diminished speckle interference effect. The laser projector (10) according to the invention has at least one laser source (12) which can be used to emit a laser beam (14) for producing an illuminated region (20) on the projection area (18). Furthermore, the beam path of the laser beam (14) contains a phase offset device (22) which is used to shift phases of parallel-oriented beam elements of the laser beam (14) relative to one another when the laser beam (14) passes through the phase offset device (22). To this end, the phase offset device (22) has propagation paths with different optical path lengths for each of the individual beam elements.
