Provided are a method and a relevant device for generating a group key. The method includes: receiving from an MME the group ID of the group where an MTC device is located and a group communication root key relevant to a security key, with the security key corresponding to the group ID; or, receiving from the MME the service ID of the service supported by the MTC device and a service root key relevant to the security key, with the security key being relevant to the service ID and determining the group ID of the group where the MTC device is located according to the service ID and generating a group communication root key according to the group ID and service root key; generating a group key corresponding to the group ID according to the group communication key; sending a generation parameter to the MTC for generating the group key so that the MTC device generates the group key according to the generation parameter and the security key stored in the MTC device. Therefore, the same group key only needs to be maintained for the same group in a base station, which can reduce the operational complexity of the base station, reducing the number of keys maintained and managed by the base station, and improving the performance of the base station.
