A magnetic building member comprises at least one permanently magnetized surface provided with one or more pairs of poles which magnetically attract an adjacent building member which is located in an accurately defined position by means of co-operating interlocking engagements. The building member comprises a synthetic plastics frame 1 fitted at each end with a barium ferrite magnetized plate 3 over a keeper plate 4. The outer surface of each magnetized plate 3 has projections 5 and notches 6 which interengage with notches and projections on a similar building member. A grid 11, Fig. 13, may be placed over the magnetized plate 3 and an iron member 12 with a surface shaped complementarily to that of the grid 11 pressed against the keeper plate 4. In another embodiment, one magnetized plate 3 may be recessed in one side of the frame and the other magnetized plate may project beyond the other side.
