An LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) and a polarizing plate set used therefor are provided to compensate retardation caused by an LC layer and a polarizing plate, widen a contrast viewing angle by suppressing light leakage caused by a viewing angle, and suppress color shift caused by the viewing angle. One sheet or more retardation plates(40) are disposed between a rear polarizing plate(20) and an LC cell(10). A sum of thickness direction retardation of a birefringent layer including the retardation plate present between a surface of an LC cell side of a polarizer(21) configuring the rear polarizing plate and a surface of a rear substrate of the LC cell is within a range of -40nm to +40nm. A sum of plane retardation is within a range of 100nm~300nm. A front polarizing plate(30) has a polarizer(31) and a visible side transparent protection layer(32,33) installed in a side opposite to a surface facing the LC cell. A thickness direction retardation from a surface of the LC cell side of the polarizer to a surface of a front substrate of the LC cell is within a range of -10nm~+40nm. |
