939,980. Reactors. GES. FUR LINDE'S EISMASCHINEN A.G. Dec. 2, 1959 [Dec. 2, 1958 (3)], No. 40970/59. Class 39 (4). A gaseous coolant, e.g. a mixture of helium and neon, is continuously purified from contamination by radioactive substances, the purified gas entering the reactor 2 after passing along flow paths denoted by the broken lines 4, the contaminated gas passing along a path denoted by a solid line 3 to the purification plant, stages 5, 10, 14. The first stage 5 comprises an adsorber cooled by a refrigerating machine 6, this stage adsorbing non-radioactive impurities. The stage 10 comprises a heat-exchanger cooled by liquid air from a unit 12 whilst stage 14 comprises an adsorber containing charcoal which removes the radioactive impurities. The stages 5, 14 are enclosed in jackets 8, 15 through which the purified gas 4 flows; also, the gas 4 flows in conduits 9, 13, 13<SP>1</SP> surrounding conduits conducting the gas 3 whereby a protective shield is provided around the gas 3. In a modified apparatus (Fig. 2, not shown) automatic means including a pump are provided for removing the gas from the plant in the event of failure of the refrigerant supply. |
