The washing machine or washer dryer has a device for flowing around and heating of washing liquor. A circulation pump (8) is provided for conveying the washing liquid from a tub (1) to outlet. Another device is provided for producing steam, where the steam is produced in a container by a heating device. The steam is directed in a laundry drum and provided in contact with the laundry. A heating and steam generating chamber (14) is arranged in a recirculation strand (13) downstream to the circulation pump. An independent claim is included for a method for operating a washing machine or washer dryer.
