PURPOSE: A 2 dimensional/3 dimensional switchable display apparatus is provided to be manufactured in low costs by reducing manufacturing processes as having high luminance and thin thickness. CONSTITUTION: A 2D image display panel(40) includes a plurality of pixels and a first polarization plate. The plurality of pixels is arranged in a matrix of columns and rows. The first polarization plate transmits an image outputted from the pixels in parallel with a first polarization axis. A first electrode layer(14) is formed on the image display panel. A first alignment film(16) is formed on the first electrode, and has an alignment direction in parallel with the first polarization axis. A second alignment film(26) is formed on the first alignment film, and has an alignment direction twisted by a predetermined angle of &thgr; from the first polarization axis. A liquid crystal layer(18) has liquid crystal filled between the first and the second alignment film. A second electrode layer(24) is formed on the second alignment film. A second polarization plate(28) is formed on the second electrode, and has a second polarization axis inclined by the predetermined angle of &thgr; from the first polarization axis.
