Anhydrous formaldehyde is polymerized using as catalyst a compound of trivalent phosphorus containing at least one amide or imide group bonded directly to phosphorus. Specified phosphorus compounds include phosphorous acid diphenylester diisobutylamide, phosphorous acid tris-diethylamide, phosphorous acid piperidideanil, phenyl-phosphinic acid-dipiperidide, phosphorous acid tri-piperidide, phenyl phosphinic acid-phenyl-hydrazone, phosphorous acid-ethylester piperidide and dimeric phosphorous acid anilide-acid. The polymerization may take place in the gas phase, in which case the catalyst is continuously introduced in dissolved form into the reactor with the formaldehyde or is sprayed therein in aerosol form, or in solution in an inert solvent, e.g. hexane and pentane. |
