The feed hopper has an access (10) formed to a side wall to allow a horse with head and neck to reach the feed hopper for feeding. A mesh net (14) is fixed at a movable support unit (12) which holds the mesh net in a position on the side wall. The support unit is lowered to another position, where the mesh net rests flat on the feed. A lower edge of the mesh net is attached to a horizontal floor panel (18) of the side wall, where the floor panel limits access to the bottom. The mesh net is made of a textile material knotted as a net, a woven wire mesh or a textile sheet with multiple openings.
