A method and device is disclosed for determining parameters for encoding an image portion in a video sequence, the image encoded by motion compensation (MC) with respect to a reference image portion, with encoding parameters including a coding mode (e.g. skip 607 or merge 611 modes) and a motion information (vector, MV) predictor (MIP). Coding mode is selected from among at least first and second coding modes and the motion information predictor is selected from a set of predictors, the same for at least the first and second (different) coding modes. Selection of the coding mode and the motion predictor involves comparing (e.g. rate distortion, RD) costs of encoding using the motion information predictors of the set in the two coding modes, and further omitting, for at least one predictor of the set, cost computation for at least one coding mode; that is, a cost is determined for only some of the predictors. The RD cost calculation may be omitted or skipped upon zero vector predictor detection or if coding mode cost exceeds another mode cost by a predetermined amount; all predictors following a predictor meeting this condition may also be omitted. |
