[Also in Division H2] A secondary battery has individual cells shunted by voltage-sensitive control devices (S 1 -S 4 ) (see Specification 936,969) that are substantially non-conductive below a threshold voltage and highly conductive above it so that the cells are shunted when fully charged. In addition, a transistor (T 1 , T 2 ) is provided to disconnect the shunt path except when a charging voltage is applied.
