Bicarbonate salts of primary, secondary and tertiary amines and mixtures thereof having molecular weights above 185 are used in water-immiscible solutions, such as benzene, to extract anions from aqueous solution into the non-aqueous phase and to replace them by bicarbonate ions. The amines may be recovered by subsequent treatment with carbon dioxide.ALSO:Brackish water is passed downwardly through a bed of weakly basic anion-exchange resin in the bicarbonate form and upwardly through a cation-exchange in the weak acid form. Carbon dioxide is removed from the treated water by a vacuum unit. This carbon dioxide ion solution is utilized to regenerate both the exchangers. The regeneration of the anion exchanger is carried out at elevated temperatures. |
