<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a see-through type head-mounted display (HMD) which allows a display image corresponding to an image signal to be easily viewed while securing visibility of a background of the external world even when viewing the display image. <P>SOLUTION: A liquid crystal display 71 and a landscape in the external world are located in the front of a user of an HMD 1. A liquid crystal device 101 emits first image light 62. A half mirror 8 reflects a part of the first image light 62 in a first direction to make it incident on user's eyes 83. The liquid crystal display 71 emits second image light 63 having a prescribed polarization angle. The second image light 63 having the prescribed polarization angle is intercepted by a first polarizer 60. The user visually recognizes the liquid crystal display 71 as black. The user can view an image based on the first image light 62 over the liquid crystal display 71 visually recognized as black.
