The charging of multicylinder I.C. engines is improved by a pressure exchange machine 20, Fig. 1, connected only to the exhaust manifolds of the cylinders and arranged so that the exhaust pressure pulse of one cylinder produces a suction in the exhaust pipe of another cylinder during its charging phase, which suction facilitates the entry of the charging air. In the two-stroke six-cylinder engine shown in Fig. 1 the cylinders C1 ... C6 are connected in sets of three to two common exhaust manifolds F1, F2, so that when an exhaust pulse is occurring in one of the cylinders of one set C1 ... C3, one of the cylinders of the other set C4 ... C6 is in its scavenging phase. The manifolds Fl, F2, are connected to the inlet ports A, B, of the pressure exchanger 20 arranged so that a pressure pulse at A produces a suction at B and vice versa. Arrangements of pressure exchangers for various numbers of cylinders are described. In Fig. 5 (not shown) the exhaust pipes D, G, of the pressure exchanger 20 are connected to a turbine 40 driving a compressor 50 feeding the cylinder intake ports. Alternatively the cell blades of the pressure exchanger may be curved, Fig. 6 (not shown), so that the pressure exchanger also acts as a turbine to drive a compressor fixed to its shaft.
