An aqueous sucrose containing suspension for coating cores, e.g. chewing gum cores, to produce dragees, comprises 45 - 85% by weight sucrose, 5 - 20% by weight fillers, and 0.01 to 10% by weight fat or fatty oil and/or ester wax. Substances which may be present in the composition include glucose, maltose, dextrines, starch, chalk, titanium dioxide, palmitin, cocoa-butter, butter, cream, beeswax, parting wax, olive oil, lecithin, sodium alginate, margarine, peppermint oil, comprisuate wax and milk powder. The cores are placed in a dragee making kettle and periodically sprayed with the suspension, drying periods being provided between each spraying, and the various steps in the process being carried out automatically. Warm air is used in the drying steps.
