A container 1 with an airtight lid in the form of sealing plate 3 limits air ingress to the container by creating a contact seal between the lid and the contents. This is achieved by means of moveable and sealable lid which is housed within the container and which can move upwards and downwards within container 1 to adapt to varying quantity levels within the container, via a compressible hemispherical component 11. An expandable gasket 6 can be modified in its diametrical dimension by a compressing or releasing action by two plates; sealing plate 2 and compression plate 3. In the release position the lid can be moved to a range of positions within the container and then sealed. The compression and release mechanism is by way of screw lock system (Fig 2) which houses an integrated venting valve 4 and stopper 7, to allow the expulsion of air as the lid is adjusted to produce a sealing contact with the contents of the container. Screw lock 8 may be turned to create upward or downward movement by the tracking of pin 9 along groove (10, Fig 1)
