A device for handling cable C at a coalface comprises two tracks 10, 11 supported along the face by roof beams, Fig. 12 (not shown), hangers 22 supporting the cable at intervals and slidable in the tracks 10, 11, and transfer points 20 between the two tracks 10, 11 at intervals therealong for the transfer of hangers 22 between the tracks, such that each hanger follows a figure eight path when moving from end to end of the coal face. The cable C has one end fixed midway along the coal face, and the other end coupled to the face machinery moving along the face. As the machinery moves to one end of the face, all the hangers are pulled along the track 10, opening spring-biased gates 19 as each hanger passes. On the return run of the machinery, each hanger 22 engages its corresponding gate 19 and is transferred to the track 11. At the mid-way point, all the hangers engage a similar gate and are transferred back into track 10 until the other end of the face is reached whereupon a similar transfer operation is carried out. A loose-ended flexible wall portion 14 is inserted adjacent the gate 19 in the track to which the hanger is transferred. The cable is supported in swivel devices 23 pivotally attached to the hangers 22 at 24. The hangers may be connected by a chain 26 to relieve tension in the cables.</p> |
