A non-cellular polyurethane is produced by mixing an organic polyisocyanate with a polyhydroxyl compound in the presence of a hydrolysable ester of ortho-formic acid or trichloro triethyl phosphite, wherein the water content of the mixture is not greater than 1% by weight. The ester of orthoformic acid may be a lower tri-alkyl ester, e.g. the triethyl ester. The polyhydroxyl compound may be a polyester, polyether, polythioether, polyacetal or monomeric aliphatic polyol. Castor oil may also be used. In Example (1) diphenylmethane 4,41-diisocyanate was added to a mixture of triethylorthoformate, castor oil, propoxylated trimethylol propane, quartz and manganese blue and allowed to react. The polyurethane was then poured into a mould or applied as a floor covering. In Example (5) BaSO4, CaCO3 and FeO were added to a mixture of castor oil, blown castor oil and triethylorthoformate. After allowing to stand for 48 hours diphenyl methane 4,41-diisocyanate was added and the lacquer applied to a base (see Division B2).ALSO:Non cellular polyurethanes (prepared by mixing an organic polyisocyanate with a polyhydroxyl compound in the presence of a hydrolysable ester of orthoformic acid or trichloro triethyl phosphite the water content of the mixture being less than 1%) (see Division C3) is applied as a floor covering on to concrete or iron by doctor rollers.
