The system has a guideway (14) with a rail carrier (18) and rails (22) that include a running surface. A vehicle-sided partial system interacts with a guideway-sided partial system during a braking process. The guideway-sided partial system is arranged outside the running surface. The vehicle-sided partial system is arranged outside wheels (38) of a rail vehicle (16) and at a lower side of the vehicle. The vehicle-sided partial system is pivotable from a resting position into a brake position and includes a friction element attached to a guideway-sided friction surface. The friction surface is arranged between the rails. Friction elements are pressed on the friction surface for producing a braking effect. An independent claim is also included for a rail transportation system.
