<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a memory controller capable of efficiently using a semiconductor memory. <P>SOLUTION: A memory controller 20 according to an embodiment comprises: a first interface 21; a second interface 23; and a control part 24. The first interface 21 transmits and receives a signal to/from a host 10. The second interface 23 transmits and receives a signal to/from a nonvolatile semiconductor memory 30. The control part 24 reserves a spare area in the semiconductor memory 30 in response to a first command that is received by the first interface 21; and writes, when data held in the semiconductor memory 30 is updated, the updated data to the spare area.
