<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow an operator to easily visually check whether a symbol added to an article, such as merchandise, is properly put over a reading unit. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A CCD camera 31 is housed in a case 60. A reading frame 15 for positioning therein the symbol added to the article is formed in a surface of the case 60, the surface facing an imaging surface of an imaging element of the CCD camera 31. LED light sources 17, 18 are mounted for illuminating the article positioned in an area of the reading frame 15 on the outer side of the case 60. A half mirror 16 for transmitting a portion of reflected light from the article illuminated by the LED light sources 17, 18 while reflecting the rest portion is fitted in the reading frame 15.
