<p>A low-smoking flame-spray material comprises Ni particles coated with Al and Ni-B. The coating of the Ni particles may be by processes as described in Specification No. 1,000,353 or by applying to the Ni particles a binder or lacquer containing the Al and Ni-B as particles in finely divided form. Specified binders are phenolic, epoxy or alkyd varnishes, varnishes containing drying oils, e.g. tuna or linseed oil, or a rubber or latex binder. Specified Ni-B alloys contain 5 to 95% by weight of B. The flame spray material may be sprayed as powder or be compacted into the form of a wire or rod, e.g. using a polyethylene binding. The material may be flame sprayed as a bonding coat for subsequent application of flame spray material. The examples are of flame spraying material bonded with a phenolic varnish on to a cleaned mild steel plate using an oxyacetylene flame. The plate is cleaned by grinding.
