A large flywheel energy storage device comprises a flywheel 7 disposed within a vacuum/containment vessel 1. By floating the flywheel containment / vacuum vessel 1 in another vessel 18 containing a suitable liquid 19, and torsionally and positionally anchoring the vacuum/containment vessel 1 using damper 6, seismic forces are considerably ameliorated and the flywheel 7 can be designed to ride through seismic events to the required level. Alternatively the flywheel containment / vacuum vessel 1 could be directly mounted on seismic mounts 13 similar to that used on buildings without any liquid or partial buoyancy attained by a lower level of liquid 19, reducing the mass on the seismic mounts 13 and adding a damping mechanism 6 therewith.
