A thermal regenerator having a rotor which includes a central rotor post 18, is characterized by supports 38 secured to the rotor post and supporting the rotor via pivoted links 46, the rounded upper ends 52 of which engage hardened metal pads 44 on an annular flange 42 mounted inside the inner shell 14 of the rotor. The location of the flange 42 is chosen to obtain optimum sealing between the rotor and adjacent ducts with regard to thermal expansion under operating conditions. Radial guide members 56 permit differential radial expansion but restrain relative rotational movement between the central post 18 and the shell 14. Heat insulation 54 keeps the inner and outer shells at about the same temperature and keeps the post and supports and guides relatively cool. The rotor post may therefore be of low cost carbon steel while the rotor proper is of heat-resistant stainless steel.
