Compositions for application to the scalp to combat baldness comprise an aqueous extract of skin taken from bovine foetuses weighing 0.8 to 2 kgs. and/or ovine foetuses weighing 500 to 900 gs, together with a topically suitable carrier or excipient. The said weights represent gestation periods of 110-150 days for the bovine foetus and of 75-100 days for the ovine foetus. The compositions may take the form of solutions, lotions, creams or gels, and may also contain cosmetic adjuvants such as dyes, perfumes anti-seborrheic agents, anti-scurf agents, and other substances to combat hair loss; e.g. cysteine-HCl, dl-methionine-HCl, or the substance LB23, a product according to Spec. No. 1,103,738 containing bovine amnotic liquid extracted before 40% of the total gestation period has elapsed. Suitable carriers are cellulose ether aqueous gel, water or aqueous ethanol. The active agent is prepared by removal of the skin of the foetus taken from the uterus immediately after slaughter, with aseptic precautions, followed by chilling to 0‹-4‹C and homogenisation in sterile distilled water. The latter preferably contains a bactericide such as merthiolate; a reducing agent, (cysteine) and a complexing agent, (trisodium citrate). The aqueous suspension is clarified by centrifuging or filtration, the residue washed with water and the washings and filtrate combined; the extract may then be lyophilised. Alternatively the skin may be frozen and ground with solid CO 2 prior to homogenising. |
