PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a medium transport apparatus in which false detection of multiple feeding is prevented from occurring when feeding media of different thicknesses.

SOLUTION: The medium transport apparatus 1 includes: an ultrasonic sensor 50 including an ultrasonic transmitter 50a and an ultrasonic receiver 50b disposed opposite each other across a medium transport path 20; type detectors 51 and 30 for discriminating between a first medium and a second medium thicker than the first medium which are fed along the transport path 20; and a multiple feed detector 30 for detecting the presence or absence of multiple feeding of media along the transport path 20 based on an output produced by the ultrasonic sensor 50 and on a detection result supplied from the type detectors 51 and 30.
