Plasticizers for polyvinyl chloride and polymethyl methacrylate comprise dibasic acid esters of formula <FORM:1083194/C3/1> in which R is an aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon group containing up to 20 carbon atoms, R1 is an alkyl or alkoxyethyl group and R2 is a terpenyl group (see Division C2) and specifically claimed are n-butyl, octyl, iso-octyl, n-butoxyethyl, n-hexyloxyethyl isobornyl phthalate. In examples the P.V.C. also contains a Cd/Ba stabilizer and to a polymethylmethacrylate the plasticizer is added in a toluene/butanol solution.ALSO:The invention comprises dibasic acid esters of formula <FORM:1083194/C2/1> in which R is an aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon group (up to 20 C), R1 is an alkyl or alkoxyethyl group and R2 is a terpenyl group, specifically n-butyl, octyl, isooctyl, n-butoxy-ethyl and n-hexyloxyethyl isobornyl phthalates, which are prepared by reacting a terpene with an alkyl or alkoxyethyl half ester of an organic dicarboxylic acid in the presence of a macrorecticular structured sulphonic acid type cation exchange resin in the acid form, and with high specific surface area. Many acids, alkyl and alkoxy groups and terpenes are specified and the products are suitable as plasticizers for polyvinyl chloride. |
