A system for rearing animals, e.g. mice, for research purposes, comprises an autoclaving unit 10 where the mice, food, bedding &c. are removed or introduced and four housing units 12, 14, 16, 18 connected through ports 112, 114, 116, 118 to the unit 10 in which the mice are reared. Access into the unit 10 is obtained through a door 92 (Fig. 5, not shown), the sterilizing operation being performed in a central compartment 90 after closure of interior doors 94, 96. When the doors 94, 96 are open access may be had to compartment 90 through transfer compartments 98, 100 by means of glove assemblies 102, 103 in windows 104, 105. Access into the units 12, 14, 16, 18 is obtained through glove assemblies 24, 26 in windows 22. Each unit such as 12 contains a table 28 and a series of cages 38 for the mice, the cages being arranged in rows one above the other and pivotally connected to vertical chains 32, 34 (Fig. 1, not shown) whereby each row is vertically movable and a selected row may be brought opposite the table 28. The atmosphere in each housing unit is controlled by a filtered forced air flow (Fig. 7, not shown). |
