A workpiece positioning mechanism, for a machine tool, comprises a pair of vertically spaced rails extending horizontally and supported by the machine tool frame for horizontal movement in a direction perpendicular to the rails, a workpiece holder supported by the rails for movement therealong, a first rotatablysupported motor-driven screw having a driving connection with the workpiece holder and lying between and parallel to the rails and movable therewith, and a second horizontal rotatably-supported motor-driven screw carried by the frame and having a driving connection with the rails and extending perpendicular to the rails. Fig. 2 shows the mechanism in position on the work-table 16 of an eccentricoperated C-frame punch press. Two rails 28 and 29 are mounted at the edges of a channelsection member which spans the table and is slidably mounted on rails 34 and 35. A m tor 38 drives a lead-screw 36 on which runs a oallnut which is connected at 37 to the channel section member. A work-holder receiving member 30 slides on the rails 28 and 29 and is driven along by a screw 31 which is rotated by a reversible electric motor 33. The work-holder 25, Fig. 7, is clamped to the front face 39 of the member 30 by T-bolts 62 which engage a corresponding slot in the face 39. The workholder has a fixed jaw 75 and a movable jaw 76 formed on a lever pivoted at 77 and biased to the open position by a spring 79. A drawbolt 78 is connected to a manually operated cam 82 by which the jaws are closed. The vertical position of the work-holder 25 on the face 39 is adjustable by a screw 84. The mechanism is intended to be controlled by a numerical control tape device and each screw includes a sensing device for indicating its position to the tape controlled device. Limit switches (64), Fig. 6 (not shown), are mounted on the top edge of the channel member and are controlled by cams (66) on the work-holder receiving member 30.</p> |
