1,105,485. Filtering apparatus. UNIT SWIMMING POOLS Ltd. 10 Sept., 1964 [9 July, 1963], No. 27071/63. Heading BID. At least one filter element 8, comprising a flat expanded-metal frame 10 covered by a textile sack 12 is enclosed in a chamber 2 having an inlet 36 and an outlet conduit 18, and each frame 10 has a nipple (14), a rectangular cross-section sealing ring (20) and a washer (22) (Fig. 2, not shown), whereby the interior of the frame is sealed to conduit 18. Fig. 2 illustrates how elements 8 are secured by nuts (26) on rods (28), bearing on a common cross-bar (24). Fig. 1 shows how water from a swimming pool enters a strainer 6 by three conduits 60 and passes via pump 4 to chamber 2. Chamber 2 has an air bleed valve 50, a drain valve 52 and a deflector plate 38 adjacent inlet 36. In use, a slurry of diatomaceous earth is added to strainer 6 and washed into chamber 2 to form a layer over sacks 12. To remove the layers, valve 54 is closed, valves 72 and 52 opened, which reverses the flow through elements 8, and the contaminated earth is washed out through valve 52. The chamber 2 may then be drained to ensure complete removal, valve 50 being opened. |
