[Also in Division F1] On ignition of a block 9 of combustible powder (or a combustible liquid) contained within a cushion of air above the level N of water in a tank 1, the water is expelled violently from the tank via a pipe 3 terminating in a nozzle 4, e.g. to drive a Pelton wheel 6, which drives the blower of a wind tunnel at high power for a short time. The nozzle 4 is disposed at a level at least as high as the level N to enable shut-off valves to be dispensed with. To prevent water hammer, particularly if the nozzle 4 is above the level N, the block 9 is formed so that its combustion occurs slowly at the beginning. An electrode mounted in the tank 1 at an appropriate height prevents ignition when the water in the tank is not at the level N. A deflector 5 provided on the nozzle 4 is moved automatically when the level of water in the tank 1 has dropped to a minimum height above the inlet of the pipe 3, to deflect the hot combustion gases from the Pelton wheel. The hot combustion gases escape through a chimney 7. Instead of being used to drive a Pelton wheel, the high speed jet of water may be fed into a duct for the hydrodynamic testing of models or machines.
