The device has an optical fiber (32) traversed by a luminous ray for carrying a fluid sensible element (38), where the fluid sensible element is made of polymer or elastomer based material. The fluid sensible element acts as an absorbent element e.g. pellet (40), whose structural characteristics vary according to absorption of the fluid e.g. fuel, and are placed opposite to a face (34) of a free end (36) of the optical fiber. A case (22) includes an open face (28) in a direction of a space (10) of a container (18) for housing the free end of the optical fiber. An independent claim is also included for a method for detecting the presence of the fluid in the space of a container.
