[Also in Division G1] A gyroscope comprises a gas-tight housing 2 containing gas, a spindle 5 journalled for rotation therein in bearings 1, 26 and carrying a spherical bearing member 17, a rotor 16 having a hollow portion therein defining a gap 30 between the rotor and the bearing member 17 and forming a gas bearing for the rotor 16, and a spirally grooved disc 22 mounted on the spindle for rotation therewith for compressing gas and feeding it by way of radial passages 23 in the disc, an axial passage 19 in the spindle 5 and passages 18 in the member 17 to pressurize the gas bearing for the rotor 16. The spindle 5 is rotated by a hysteresis motor 3, 4 and the grooves in the disc 22 and the clearance between it and the walls 25 surrounding it are such that gas is forced centrifugal outwards and compressed before being fed to the rotor bearing. An alternative arrangement of two discs keyed to the spindle 5 is also described. A shield 14 surrounds the rotor and prevents windage effects. A caging mechanism from the rotor is also provided, and this comprises a sleeve 8 urged against the rotor by a spring 7 to engage a taper 15 thereon, the centrifugal effect of balls 10 forcing the sleeve 8 out of engagement with the rotor at the operational speed of the gyroscope rotor.
