#CMT# #/CMT# The method involves operating an internal combustion engine (10) in a spark ignition (SI)-mode and a homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI)-mode. The internal combustion engine is switched from the SI-mode to the HCCI mode. Stroke and control times of inlet valves of the engine are changed. HCCI incineration is introduced by residual gas retention. Fuel is injected into the engine in a compression stroke. Injected fuel amount is adjusted to avoid rotational torque jumps during switching of the modes.
