1,128,172. Vinyl chloride polymers. SOC. EDISON S.p.A. 29 Nov., 1965 [3 Dec., 1964], No. 50648/65. Heading C3P. Vinyl chloride polymers are made by polymerizing, at low temperature, and preferably in bulk, vinyl chloride alone, or in admixture with a minor proportion of a copolymerizable monomer, in the presence of from 0À0001 to 0À5 parts by weight per 100 parts of vinyl chloride or monomer mix, of one or more ethylenically and/or acetylenically unsaturated compounds having 4 or 5 carbon atoms such as butadiene, isoprene, chloroprene, pentadiene, cyclopentadiene, and monovinylacetylene. The unsaturated compound may be added at the beginning of the reaction or continuously during the reaction. The unsaturated compounds may be present in the vinyl chloride as an impurity. Exemplified polymerization cataylsts are triethyl boron and/or oxygen, or cumene hydroperoxide.
