A resistant electrode comprises a member composed of titanium, niobium, or chromium or an alloy composed mainly of one or more of these elements having its surface provided with a coating of a nitride the main element. The electrode may be of rod or sheet form and the coating may be formed by heating in an atmosphere of nitrogen or ammonia, e.g. a plate of titanium containing up to 6% of vanadium may be heated at 590 DEG C. in an atmosphere of nitrogen. The electrode may be made by powder metallurgy methods or may be in tube form and filled with another metal, e.g. a thin walled titanium tube filled with lead. The electrode is stated to be particularly useful as an anode in electrolysis. Specifications 855,107 and 869,865 are referred to. |
