In a refractory safe or chest having an air gap disposed between the safe body and the door 57 in its closed position, a heat shield or screen 56 is resiliently mounted as by springs 64 on the door to remain applied against the frame of the door aperture in the body in spite of distortions due to heat. The member 56 may be retrained against the action of the springs in an inoperative position by fusible wires, see Fig. 4 (not shown).
