<p>The invention provides a method of densifying a fibrous material, comprising: adding, to a fibrous material, a binder selected from the group consisting of water soluble binders, water swellable binders, and binders having a glass transition temperature of less than 25°C, to provide a fibrous material-binder combination; and compressing the fibrous material-binder combination to provide a densified fibrous material having a bulk density that is at least about two times greater than the bulk density of the fibrous material. The invention further provides a pellet or chip comprising a densified fibrous material having a bulk density of at least 0.3 g/cm3, comprising a cellulosic or lignocellulosic material and a binder, the chip or pellet having an average thickness between about 2 mm and about 10 mm, an average width of between about 2 mm and about 20 mm and an average length of between about 5 mm and about 25 mm, wherein the binder is selected from the group consisting of water soluble binders, water swellable binders, and binders having a glass transition temperature of less than 25°C.</p> |
