The invention relates to an optical isolator which has at least one Faraday rotator (6) between two polarisers or a polariser and a quarter-wave plate (7), wherein one or both polarisers are formed by polarisation-maintaining optical fibres (4, 5) which are wound into a spiral, wherein a radius and/or a pitch of the spiral changes over a length of the polarisation-maintaining fibres. The optical isolator permits the transmission of high power in continuous operation with low insertion loss.
